Assam & Meghalaya

Guwahati | Kaziranga | Shillong | Cherrapunjee
ITINERARY:

Day 1 : Arrival in Guwahati – Drive to Kaziranga National Park
Upon arrival at Guwahati Airport, begin your journey towards the wild heart of Assam — Kaziranga National Park (195 km / 4.5–5 hours). Drive through verdant fields and charming tea estates. Once at Kaziranga, check into your jungle lodge and spend the evening soaking in the sounds of the forest. Enjoy a traditional Assamese dinner under the stars. Overnight in Kaziranga (2 nights).

Day 2 : Jeep Safari & Elephant Ride in Kaziranga
Rise early for an unforgettable elephant safari in the central range of Kaziranga, home to the one-horned rhinoceros, swamp deer, and wild buffalo. After breakfast, relax at your lodge before setting out on an afternoon jeep safari in the western range, known for tiger sightings and vibrant birdlife. The park’s natural beauty—tall elephant grass, wetlands, and dense forests—creates a dramatic backdrop. Wrap up the day with local cultural performances and cuisine.

Day 3 : Kaziranga to Shillong
After breakfast, drive to Shillong, the charming capital of Meghalaya (255 km / ~6.5 hours). The scenic journey takes you past misty hills, rivers, and waterfalls. On arrival, check into your hotel and relax. Take a gentle evening walk around Ward’s Lake, or browse the handicraft shops in Police Bazaar. Shillong’s pine-clad setting and colonial-era architecture offer a warm welcome. Overnight stay in Shillong (3 nights).

Day 4 : Explore Shillong & Laitlum Canyons
Start with a visit to Shillong Peak, offering panoramic views of the city and its forested surrounds. Then head to Elephant Falls, a serene three-tiered cascade. In the afternoon, drive to the spectacular Laitlum Canyons (24 km / ~1 hour), known as the “end of the world” for its jaw-dropping gorges and lush green valleys. Return to Shillong for the evening and try Khasi cuisine at local restaurants like Jadoh or Trattoria.

Day 5 : Day Trip to Mawlynnong & Dawki
Set out early for a full-day excursion to Mawlynnong (78 km / ~2.5 hours), Asia’s cleanest village. Stroll through bamboo walkways, visit the Living Root Bridge, and enjoy the village's eco-friendly charm. Then continue to Dawki (34 km / ~1 hour) to experience the crystal-clear waters of the Umngot River—a boat ride here feels like floating on glass. Return to Shillong by evening, with a scenic drive through the East Khasi Hills.

Day 6 : Shillong to Cherrapunjee (Sohra)
Today, drive to Cherrapunjee (54 km / ~2 hours), one of the wettest places on Earth. En route, stop at Mawsmai Cave, Nohkalikai Falls (India’s tallest plunge waterfall), and Eco Park. The cliffs and clouds of Cherrapunjee offer surreal views. Settle into a cliffside resort for stunning sunset views over the Bangladesh plains. Enjoy the fresh mountain air and the melody of falling water. Overnight stay in Cherrapunjee (2 nights).

Day 7 : Double-Decker Root Bridge Trek
Wake early for the iconic trek to the Double-Decker Living Root Bridge in Nongriat (6 km trek / ~3–4 hours each way). Descend nearly 3,000 steps through dense forests and across suspension bridges, encountering waterfalls and vibrant flora. The natural marvel of the bridge, formed from living tree roots, is both a cultural and ecological wonder. Return to Cherrapunjee by late afternoon for a relaxed evening at your eco-resort.

Day 8: Cherrapunjee to Guwahati
After breakfast, begin your drive back to Guwahati (150 km / ~5 hours), passing through pine forests, valleys, and tea gardens. Upon arrival, check into your hotel and relax. In the evening, take a sunset cruise on the Brahmaputra River or explore the riverfront promenade. Sample local Assamese thalis or enjoy fusion dishes at cafes like Terra Maya. Overnight stay in Guwahati (2 nights).

Day 9: Explore Guwahati – Temples & Culture
Start your day with a visit to the sacred Kamakhya Temple, perched atop Nilachal Hill. Then head to Umananda Island, the smallest inhabited river island in the world. Later, explore the Assam State Museum and shop for silk in local markets. For a cultural experience, watch a Bihu performance or try regional delicacies like duck curry and pithas. Guwahati offers a vibrant mix of tradition, modernity, and riverine beauty.

As you bid farewell to Assam and Meghalaya, carry with you memories of misty mountains, vibrant cultures, pristine rivers, and soulful cuisine.
